Joining Hansraj College in 1991 as an Assistant Professor in the Hindi Department, she rose to become the Officiating Principal in 2015 and was later confirmed as the Principal in 2018. Under her leadership, the college has flourished, seamlessly blending modern education with Vedic values, as envisioned by Mahatma Hansraj. With over 15 years of academic and professional experience, Dr. Gulati’s work spans biomedical waste management, clinical trials, drug development, scientific communication, and the interplay between modern science and traditional knowledge systems. Her journey from a PhD at Maharishi Markandeshwar University to advanced studies in Pharmacy at Panjab University reflects a rare blend of scientific depth and policy engagement. Bharatiya Neeti Samvad Kendra (BNSK) is privileged to have Dr. Vanmala Hiranandani as the Key Advisor on Health Equity and Public Health Ethics. With over three decades of teaching, research, and practice in public health, disability rights, food and nutrition security, sustainable development, and humanitarian emergencies, Dr. Hiranandani has made significant contributions across Canada, Denmark, India, and the United States. She holds a Master of Arts in Social Work with a specialization in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and later pursued an M.Phil. in Social Work at TISS, during which she was awarded the prestigious Women and Development Fellowship by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. Her fellowship research at Queen’s University in Canada focused on participatory research with women with disabilities and their experiences with healthcare post-budget cuts, which furthered her interest in disability advocacy and public health. She then completed her Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy in the United States, conducting in-depth research on healthcare access for low-income populations, including persons with disabilities. Her research findings reinforced the critical link between poverty, health, and nutrition security, particularly among vulnerable populations in North America. Over the years, she has held faculty positions in social work, international development, public health, and disaster management in several universities, including in the USA, Canada, India, and Denmark. From 2012 to 2021, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Global Nutrition and Health at University College Copenhagen, a WHO Collaborating Centre in Europe, where she played a key role in redesigning public health and nutrition curricula to meet international standards. She has taught and conducted research in diverse areas such as health communication, equity and social justice, research methods, policy advocacy, food security, sustainable development, health promotion, and inter-cultural communication. She developed and taught innovative courses, including an elective on Resilience and Positive Psychology, and collaborated with the Catastrophe and Risk Management department to design an inter-professional course on food and nutrition security in humanitarian emergencies. She was also a guest lecturer in the Bachelor of Nursing program and an External Associate Professor in the MSc in Global Health at the University of Copenhagen. Her academic excellence was recognized when she was nominated for the Excellent Education Prize at University College Copenhagen in 2019. Beyond academia, Dr. Hiranandani has led and contributed to several international research projects, including studies on the impact of climate change on women’s food security in Kampala, Uganda, a WHO-funded evaluation of a community-based NGO working on urban health in Mumbai, and case studies on good practices in India based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). She is actively engaged in global policy forums, including Listening to the Earth and Listening Inspires, which bring together distinguished experts from the UN system. Following the closure of English-taught programs at University College Copenhagen in 2021, she returned to India and has since been working as an honorary consultant with grassroots NGOs engaged in health promotion, prevention of non-communicable diseases, women’s empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, disability advocacy, and health initiatives for mining-affected communities. She is associated with organizations such as People’s Association for Training and Health (PATH) in Mumbai, which focuses on tuberculosis eradication and health promotion in urban slums; Dhaatri Resource Centre in Secunderabad, which supports rural and indigenous women in the intersection of ecological sustainability and women’s rights; Sampoorna Bamboo Kendra in Melghat, Maharashtra, which provides sustainable livelihood training for tribal youth; and World Children Welfare Trust India, which runs Bal Anand, an orphanage in Mumbai, and Umang, a residential facility for abandoned young adults with disabilities in Karjat. With her vast experience in global structural, economic, and environmental determinants of public health, she brings a unique and deeply informed perspective to BNSK’s initiatives. Her extensive expertise in the interconnections between development paradigms, environmental health, climate change, agriculture, food and nutrition security, and healthcare access makes her an invaluable asset to BNSK. As Key Advisor on Health Equity and Public Health Ethics, Dr. Hiranandani will provide strategic guidance in shaping evidence-based policy interventions focused on public health, social inclusion, and sustainable development.
